Being a fan of rock music, I had always been keen to attend the much talked about Rocktoberfest.

I finally got to attend the fourth edition of the annual music event that held on Saturday, 27th of October, 2018.

Body and face artworks and design painting, black merchandise tees and loud music greeted me as I strolled in to the venue.

My Shazam app was put to good use as I discovered many interesting songs (title and artist name) DJ Flammzy, the official DJ of the event (who sure knows his rock music well) was spinning. I got to sing along as well with the lyrics in the app.  It was electrifying!

The community of rock music fans in Nigeria is something to behold. Lip syncing their favourite songs such as Coldplay’s ‘Fix you’ and Hoobastank’s ‘The Reason’ was a blessing. The head banging (typical of rockstars) competition exuded passion by the contestants – which saw a white dude win thanks to the ‘long hair effect’ and throwing his shirt off into the audience.

A  fine healthy mix of beautiful ladies and gentlemen in their youthful exuberance demonstrated their insane love for rock music.

Headliners of the show Celeste, Nathmac, Clay, RepJ360 and Skatavibration all worked their magic beautifully.

Soul singer Michstraaw had his moment on stage and delivered some fantastic vocals.

The frequent on-goers of the show and myself look forward to bigger things for Rocktoberfest,  seeing rock music as more than just a niche that deserves a bigger stage than it presently is being served in the Nigerian music scene.

All in all, it was a good return for the annual  music and culture showcase- a celebration of the ‘madness’ that is rock music.

Fingers crossed  we get to see maybe a Nickelback or an Avril Lavigne as featured guest artists next year.

Here’s to rock!
